Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software are increasingly used in historical research around the world. GIS technology allows users to recreate historical space using geographic and cartographic information from the past by grounding it in modern data. In this session you will be introduced to the powers of GIS through a short presentation and hands-on workshop. Participants will learn to geographically position(georeference) digital reproductions of historic maps onto modern geospatial data to visualize the past spatially. The second part of the workshop will be to create new historical data using the georeferenced maps.
